LAUPAHOEHOE

Once the site of the town of Laupahoehoe, the Tsunami of 1946 swept away 24 people from this site. Today, there stands a memorial to those who died here and the village relocated itself further up the hill on the land side of HI State Route 19. Located about halfway between Hilo and Waimea just past mile marker 27 on Hawaii State Route 19, you will see a sign directing you to the park. The road is a single lane highway but the view from the point is nice and worth a look. You can walk out onto the jetty to see the typically rough, churning waves hit this part of the coastline. Tent camping is allowed with a permit in this park and there are picnic tables available if you want to take a break in this lovely park.
