LAVA TREE STATE PARK

When you hear the name Lave Tree State Park, do you have visions of trees coated with lava?  Well, actually, only the trunks remain as the fast flowing lava raced through this area hitting the ohia trees in its mad dash through the countryside. Most of these lava covered trunks are charred and broken and are now covered with moss due to the high moisture in the area but are still interesting to see.

The park has a circular path that is a nice 30 or 45 minute walk depending up on how fast you walk. The dense rain forest in the area is interesting with many exotic plants that you certainly won’t see on the mainland. Mosquito repellant is a good thing to have before setting out on the path here as the bugs can be brutal in these heavily wooded areas. There are restrooms in the park and benches if you need them on your tour through this area. The park is located in the Puna District on Hawaii State Route 132 a few miles southeast of the junction with HSR 130.
