If you are interested in exploring the flora of Kauai, take a trip along the Kuhio Hwy 560 to the Limahuli Gardens located a quarter of a mile before Ke’e Beach. These gardens, part of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, are estimated to be 700 to 1,000 years old. The gardens contain elaborate terraces built into the hillsides designed to grow taro to make Hawaiian poi. The terraces are set among tall mountains and have a great view of the ocean as well. Seventeen of the park’s 965 acre area is open to the public. Here you can learn about native Hawaiian plants as well as those brought to the islands by ancient Polynesian peoples. The gardens are open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 A.M. to 4 P.M. The ¾ mile walking loop will take about 1 ½ hours to complete so wear sturdy shoes. Bring sunscreen and a hat for a more enjoyable experience. Admission is $15 for adults and children are free. Call before going to get a reservation for a guided tour. Self-guided tours do not require reservations. |
