Waimea Canyon

One of the most impressive sights on Kauai is the Waimea Canyon. Called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” by Mark Twain, the canyon is 10 miles long and 3,000 feet deep. Like the Grand Canyon, the Waimea Canyon was forged by the deep cut of the Waimea River carrying plentiful rainfall from Kauai’s tallest mountain peak, Mt. Wai’ale’ale. Like the Grand Canyon, the colors of the canyon walls are vibrant and change with the time of day. Since rainfall is plentiful on this island, the river has cut an impressive canyon through the mountainside on it’s rush to the sea.

To get to the canyon, drive along Hwy 550, Waimea Canyon Road, from the town of Waimea. Stop at Waimea Canyon Lookout as you snake along Waimea Canyon Road for your first glimpse into the beautiful canyon. From the Pu’u Ka Pela Lookout you can see the 800 foot Waipo’o Falls. In the winter months, these falls are usually flowing quite fully so the view is impressive. If you are looking to hike in the Waimea Canyon, the hike to the falls is an excellent ½ day trip.  From the Pu’u Hinahina Lookout, you can see Ni’ihau, the private island 17 miles off of Kauai’s coastline. Just after mile marker 15 you will arrive at the Koke’e Museum and Lodge. The museum will give some good information about the Canyon as well as some 3-D relief maps.  At mile marker 18, you will come to the Kalalua Lookout and the Pu’u o Kila Lookout. Be sure to stop by both for some gorgeous mountain scenery.

If you go during October to May, Kauai’s wetter season, you may encounter rain and not be able to see the canyon beauty so check the weather before you take the drive.  Try to go as early in the day as possible as the warmer the air becomes, the more clouds tend to move into the canyon.
