7 Sacred Pools

One of the most beautiful  and relaxing places on Maui is ‘Ohe’o Gulch also known as the Seven Sacred Pools.  Located on the east side of the island on the grounds of Haleakala National Park the area is popular with visitors and well worth a visit. The area was donated to Haleakala National Park as a 52 acre parcel by Laurance Rockefeller so that everyone could enjoy the beautiful area in the 60’s. It is reported that the name “Seven Sacred Pools” was coined by Hana town’s folk to entice visitors to the area. Thus there was never anything sacred about this area other than it’s beauty and peacefulness.

The Pipiwai stream originates 2 miles inland from mountain runoff and feeds this series of gorgeous and scenic falls and pools. Although there are more than 7 pools along the route to the sea, the easiest to reach and the most spectacular are the ones located near the shoreline. Here, the pools and waterfalls invite swimming, cliff diving, hiking and swimming in the clear and refreshingly brisk waters.  After enjoying your swim and play at the pools, drive on back to Hana town to explore the town and have a bite to eat.

To reach the falls take Hwy 30 east to Hana. Be prepared for all of the twists and turns of the road however as the road is narrow and has many switch-backs along the way. Continue on past Hana where Hwy 30 turns into Hwy 31. Drive 10 miles on this road to just past mile marker 42 where you will find a parking lot on the ocean side of the road. The pools are often crowed in the afternoon so come early to get a good parking space.
