Since the islands were formed by lava flows, the islands are riddled with large lava tubes that are fun and interesting to explore.  If you find this type of thing interesting, be sure to stop by Ka’eleku Cave on your way to Hana. Located approximately 3 hours from west and south Maui, this large cave formation, filled with interesting stalactites and stalagmites is an informative and pleasant tour.  The caves have stairways with handrails and are easily accessible for a 40 minute self-guided tour. The temperature inside is comfortable year round for a pleasant hike though the cave interior. The grounds have covered picnic areas and there is a large red Ti Botanical garden maze to explore. The cave is open daily from 10:30 A.M. to 4 P.M. 7 days per week. Cost is $11.95 for admission with children under 5 free.

To get to the Ka’eleku Cave, Take the Hana Hwy 360 from Kalului toward Hana. Just after mile marker 21, turn left onto Ulaino Road. Continue about a half mile on Ulaino Road to the Cave Visitor Center entrance. This is one of the larger and more interesting lava caves in the islands so be sure to take the time to stop by and tour this wonderful beauty.
