One of the most interesting things about Hawaii are the different types of sands that line her beaches. You can find white sand, beige sand, salt and pepper sand, black sand and even green sand but some of the most unusual sand is red sand located on the east side of Maui near the town of Hana. Take Highway 31 to Uakea Rd. and find a parking space near the intersection of Hauoli Rd. There is a path that goes down to the shore from this area. The 5 minute walk to the beach is steep and can be dangerous if the ground is wet or slippery so be careful in this area. While the beach is not especially good for swimming or snorkeling, the view of the red sand in the area is well worth the trip down to the beach. |
