Maui has it all from sugar sand beaches to red sand to black sand beaches. Located just a couple of miles north of Hana around mile marker 32, you will find a sign indicating a small gravel road that leads to Waianapanapa State Park. Here you will come to Pa’iloa, a rather small black sand beach. The park has cabins for rent, nice restroom and shower facilities, picnic areas and even space for camping. Near the beach are the remnants of old lava tubes that create an interesting freshwater cave. While the cave opening at the beach is rather narrow, the cave opens out into a larger area and ends with a large opening to the ocean on the other side of the cave. While the water filling the cave is fresh, ocean waters mix with the cave water leaving it slightly salty. During drier months of the year, there may not be much water in the cave at all. This is definitely a must see as the only black sand beach on Maui. |
