Ziplining, that new sport of hanging by a harness and zipping down a cable as speeds of up to 30 miles per hour high above the treetops, is alive and popular in Maui. If you enjoy thrill rides that move quickly across the tangled canopy of Maui brush and ravines and are not afraid of heights, you will love ziplining. These tours fill up fast so you may want to call well before you arrive to make your reservation. Some tours require hikes to get to the ziplining location so talk to the tour operator about physical requirements or line weight restrictions before you book your activity. Most tour operators recommend wearing long pants and closed toed shoes to protect yourself on your event.
Maui’s newest zipline adventure is located a Pi’iholo Ranch near the town of Makawao. Pi’iholo Ranch offers a 4 line and a 5 line zipline tour each beginning with a walk over a 317 ft suspension bridge to the zipline course. You can also climb on their 6 sided adventure tour and a walk-along course is also available for visitors who want to walk-along and photograph ziplining friends or relatives. The cost of the 4 line tour is $140 and the cost of the 5 line tour is $190 per person. The walk-along tour is $25 per person. To get to Pi’iholo Ranch, go east on Makawao Avenue. Turn right on Pi’iholo Road and drive for 1.5 miles. Turn Left on Waiahiwi Road and drive to the ranch gate and entrance.
The oldest zipline tour company is Skyline Eco-Adventures with a 5 cable, zipline tour near Haleakala Ranch. This tour costs around $92 and suspends you over a lush forest jungle. The five cables afford spectacular views but the waits can often be long since the company takes a large group on each tour. To get to the tour departure point, take Hwy 27 to Hwy 377. Turn left onto Hwy 376 or Crater Road and drive 2 ½ miles to the company office.
Skyline Eco-Adventures also offers a zipline tour leaving from their Fairway shop in Ka’anapali. This 8- 4 hour tour costs $156 per person but includes a meal and water. The ziplines travel over a hot and dry part of the island so be sure to wear sunscreen and have water along for this trip. There are some great views on this trip and you may even be able to see Molokai or even Lanai on a clear day from these heights.
Another ziplining tour taking you across the Maui mountain tops is available from Kapalua Resort. The Kapahua Adventures Mountain Outpost offers ziplining tours over 8 dual tracks on a 2 mile scenic course which is one of the longest courses in Hawaii. The dual tracks allow partners to ride the lines together across from one another on the trip. To get to the origination of this ziplining event, go north on Hwy 30 past the towns of Lahaina and Napili. Take a left on Office Road into the Kapalua Resort area. Turn right on Village Road and drive to the Adventure Center building. Prices vary depending on the tour and various tours also have physical requirements or weight restrictions, so it is best to call and discuss your options with the company before making your reservation.
