There is probably no more familiar landmark that signifies the island of Oahu than Diamond Head which dominates the end of the island in Honolulu. From the top of the 761 summit, the view of Honolulu, the ocean and the island expanse is spectacular. The trail is 1.6 miles round trip. The climb up takes about 30 minutes or so if you are in good shape and perhaps 45 minutes to an hour if you are not - depending on how fast you walk and how many stops you make along the way to rest or take pictures. There is an Observation Station at the summit with a few sets of metal stairways to help with the climb. |
If you intend to hike on Diamond Head, be sure to get there early because parking is limited and this is an extremely popular place. You can also take the bus that stops near the entrance on Diamond Head Road. This is a bit further to walk but eliminates the parking problems. Gates open at 6 A.M. and close at 6 P.M. Also remember that Hawaii does get hot so the earlier you go, the more pleasant the walk will be due to both heat and crowds. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes as the path can be uneven and take water, sunscreen and your hat as well. This path is not for baby strollers or those who cannot navigate stairs. |
If you drive in from Diamond Head Road, you will pass through the Kahala Tunnel. Once inside the crater, there is a toll booth to take your fees. Parking is $5.00 per carload or $1.00 per person for walk-ins. Near the parking lot is a comfort station and information booth. The trail itself can be rocky and uneven. There are a couple of short, adequately lit tunnels that you will pass through on your way to the summit as well as several sets of stairways. When you reach the Fire Control Station Lookout, be sure to snap a few pictures of the great ocean views from this location. Navigate another 54 metal steps and you are at the summit of the carter. At the Diamond Head Observation Station, you can enjoy the 360 degree views of Waikiki and the rest of the island delights. Once at the top, you will find that the view has definitely been worth the climb! The trip back down takes less time and is less strenuous of course, – usually about a half hour – give or take 5 to 10 minutes. This is definitely a “must do” at least once for your Oahu visit. |
